American Public Education goes Public

The active public markets in for-profit education companies got a bit more active with the introduction of a new entry, a company called American Public Education.

Some may be familiar with this company's flagship offering, called American Military University. The company reports an enrollment of 27,00 students living in all 50 states and more than 130 foreign countries enrolled in 57 degrees, 49 certificate programs.

The for-profit sector has showed renewed strength. According to the most recent Postsecondary Education Quarterly Report by Stifel Nicholaus "student volume growth was 11.2%, above the group’s historical average (TTQ) of about 8.4% and reaching double digits for a second consecutive quarter after 7 quarters of low-to-mid single digit growth."

The Tipping Point offers stories about how little things can lead to big changes. I especially enjoy the discussions of how epidemics of consumer behavior are fueled.

Freakonomics offers some surprising views on how the free market really works and how alternative thinking can address some of today's biggest challenges.
